What is Parkour?

When you take a Gymja Warrior class, your skill level or experience is not important; we have a wide range of options available for people of all ages and abilities. We aim to challenge students physically and mentally, keeping them active during class and teaching them exciting and creative moves.

For people who are not familiar with Parkour, the idea of it can be somewhat intimidating. The Parkour philosophy, however, is one of overcoming fear, solving problems and accomplishing the goals that you set for yourself. Parkour allows anyone out there to regularly train with conviction, intelligence, and for fun.

When people think about Parkour, they simply picture the flips, tricks and other aerial acrobatics that dominate videos online. While this speed and these moves are part of Parkour, they are far from totally necessary. Parkour is also a state of mind, as it forces people to find their own best way through a particular situation, from moment to moment. Even as you move from one week to the next, you could be facing down the same set of obstacles.

The health benefits of Parkour are many; by getting from point A to point B as creatively as possible, the obstacle courses require the person to be physically capable. Underpinning the Parkour philosophy is the idea of self-improvement and self-understanding.

It is not just the way you move that defines Parkour; but the physical motion combined with the idea of altruism and useful strength. Getting through a difficult course requires a fair amount of mental toughness as well, because you must first defeat the little voice in your head that causes you to doubt yourself and your physical capabilities.
