What is Parkour?

Parkour has become increasingly popular in the United States in the past decade or so. While it is heavily represented in action movies, such as the James Bond films, it has also become popular as an activity, or hobby, as well. Also known as “freerunning”, parkour is a training discipline, that was developed for military obstacle course training. While it is no longer used for this, it still utilizes the same basic principles as when the idea was originally conceived. This principle is to get from one point to another, while in a complex environment, without using any additional equipment. Some examples of this is vaulting over an obstacle, instead of walking around it, or radically, by jumping from one building to another without using a ladder, or plank, etc. What it really comes down to is getting from point a to point b in a fast an efficient manner.

Developed in France, Parkour became very popular in the 1990’s, as well as the 2000’s and it seems to be here to stay. It is widely considered to be a form of martial art, however, it can be practiced in any setting. It is typically practiced in urban areas, but it is not limited to this. Alongside this, one can perform parkour at any time, alone, or in a group of people. Some of the more popular maneuvers are as follows below:

  • Running
  • Jumping
  • Climbing
  • Swinging
  • Vaulting
  • Rolling

At Gymja Warrior, we offer a few different classes in relation to Parkour. For our intro classes, student will learn the ideology of parkour as well as the basic skills that are needed to progress safely and efficiently. Beginner Parkour is a little bit different in that the student have already learned the basics. This class is used to link together these skills in order to create progressions of their movements. The Intermediate class is even more advanced in that it is used as a form of application of knowledge learned. To learn more about our parkour classes, feel free to contact us by filling out our contact form or call us directly at 978-816-6767 for more information.
